Project Overview

The Lower Swift Creek Stream Restoration and Stabilization Project focuses on a mile of lower Swift Creek outside of Afton, WY near its confluence with the Salt River. Swift Creek experiences significant impairments from top to bottom, including a hydropower dam, dewatering, and channelization in upstream areas, and sediment transport issues and bank and channel instability in lower reaches. Project partners including Trout Unlimited, Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) have the opportunity to work with two primary stream-adjacent landowners to restore stream function, bank stability, floodplain connectivity and riparian vegetation to lower Swift Creek while also preventing the loss of about 800 feet of valuable spawning habitat for Yellowstone cutthroat trout (Snake River cutthroat trout subspecies) important to the Salt River fishery.
